The department's first virtual classroom visit

At the invitation of the Utica Center for Mathematics, Science and Technology, Senior Lecturer Richard Pineau virtually visited three classes of Mrs. Wendy Morin's Advanced Placement (AP) Calculus students. This set of students is preparing for the BC version of the exam, which if they are successful, would allow them to place out of at least one Calculus course, depending on the institution they attend. This was the department's first virtual school visit since the COVID-19 pandemic began.

During each one-hour session, Pineau spoke to the students about the importance of mathematics, the degree programs offered by our department, and what earning a mathematics degree could mean in the long run. He also provided students with some key study strategies in preparing for the AP Exam which, at the time of the visit, was just over two months away. He made sure students did not forget some of the basics with an old-fashioned true and false review of key concepts, before moving into a discussion on the importance of academic integrity. He concluded by imparting some of his own words of wisdom taken from his time as a student and faculty member at Wayne State.

On Tuesday, March 9, Mr. Pineau was invited back to speak virtually with two sections of Mrs. Morin's Math Analysis (Pre-Calculus) 10th graders. He spoke more extensively about the department's programs and offered students vital study tips that they can use beyond the mathematics classroom. The students asked a lot of great questions!
