SIAM and Econ Club co-host Game Night at the Michigan Science Center
Wayne State University students came together for a night of games, exploration and interdisciplinary connection during a game night hosted in April by the university’s chapters of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) and the Economics Club.
Held at the Michigan Science Center and supported by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the event drew graduate and undergraduate students from across academic disciplines. Attendees explored museum exhibits, including the popular dinosaur hall featuring a life-sized Tyrannosaurus rex cast skeleton, while enjoying pizza, snacks and a variety of multiplayer games.
The event emphasized the intersection of applied mathematics and economics through the lens of game theory. Cooperative video games like "Overcooked" and "Mario Kart," projected on the museum’s giant theater screen, provided a lighthearted way to connect concepts from the classroom to real-life social dynamics.
“It was a great break from our stressful study life,” said Richard Zhang, a SIAM student member. “We were able to chat, relax and even exchange academic advice.”
SIAM Vice President Joseph Crachiola said the event fostered valuable connections between clubs. “It was cool to meet people from the Economics Club,” he said. “I hope this event leads to future collaborations.”
Brielle Komosinski, a master’s student, praised the atmosphere and unique setting. “The Science Center staff were fantastic, and it was super cool to play "Mario Kart" in a theater,” she said.
SIAM Chapter President Shawzub Raza also expressed gratitude for the evening’s success. “The arrangement of games was spot on. I had a great time playing big card Uno and "Overcooked" with friends,” he said. “I’m grateful to the staff and organizers who made it all happen.”
Students left the event with new friendships, fresh perspectives on game theory, and a few fun facts about dinosaurs.
Through the chapter, Wayne State students are eligible for free SIAM student memberships, which offer access to research journals, discounted conferences, professional development resources and networking opportunities with peers and professionals in STEM fields.
