Rocking the field: Geology students unearth the wonders of the earth on field expedition
Wayne State's fall 2023 mineralogy class tracked to Bancroft, Canada to learn about the local geology from treasured geologists David Lowrie and David Doherty.
Students were lucky to have access to the Princess Sodalite Mine with many students finding amazing blue sodalite pieces along with magnetite, feldspars and appetites. Titanite Hill was another great locality where many students enjoyed mining biotite, apatite and titanite. The group was very enthusiastic to learn about the different minerals and mining methods of the nearby localities.
Petrology and structural geology classes head to Missouri
The petrology and structural geology classes also combined for a field trip down to Missouri. This trip allowed students to bond with each other and strengthen their field geology skills.
Students had a great time camping at the Johnson Shut-In State Park which is close to the amazing geologic shut-in formations. One of the group's favorite stops of the trip was the spectacular columnar rhyolite joints.
