John Zawiskie attends NSF Cutting Edge Early Earth Workshop

The formation of planet Earth continues to be a subject of great mystery and intense scientific investigation. Growing public awareness of global climate change issues has increased the need to better understand and communicate the scientific evidence for significant changes over the Earth's history.

To this end, John Zawiskie, Cranbrook Institute of Science Geologist and part-time Wayne State University geology department faculty member, was selected to attend an NSF Cutting edge workshop on Teaching about the Early Earth: Evolution of Tectonics, Life and the Early Atmosphere.

This workshop was held at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst in April 2007. It brought together 36 college professors from across the USA to share, discuss and brainstorm ideas for effectively teaching college students about the early Earth. Zawiskie, who teaches GEL 1020: Interpreting the Earth - has a well-deserved reputation for bringing his exciting research on Earth history into the classroom.

He returned from the early Earth Workshop invigorated and ready to challenge his students during the upcoming academic year.
