Jeff Howard receives U.S.G.S. mapping grant

WSU Geology Dept. Associate Professor Jeffrey Howard will be leading a team of graduate and undergraduate WSU students in a field mapping project of the Quaternary geology of the Pontiac South quadrangle this summer. This environmentally sensitive area, which covers West Bloomfield, Franklin and part of Farmington Hills, contains numerous lakes and wetlands. Howard recently obtained his third grant from the United States Geological Survey's EDMAP program. EDMAP is the educational component of the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program created by an act of Congress in 1992. Goals of the program are to train the next generation of geologic mappers and facilitate the generation and publication of geologic maps. A detailed geologic map of the Pontiac South quadrangle will help society make better decisions about resource use and management in southeastern Michigan.
