Environmental science student receives scholarship in environmental conflict studies
Christopher Cohen has been named the winner of the 2011 Cardno JF New Scholarship in Environmental Conflict Studies. This award is designed to help develop graduates with a strong knowledge of emerging environmental concerns along with skills in conflict management to help resolve environmental issues.
Controversies over water resources, clean air, global warming, land and waterway use and other issues related to resource disputes are increasingly difficult to manage in the U.S. and around the world. Preparing graduates to promote constructive and scientifically sound solutions to these issues will promote international cooperation and sustainable habitation of our planet in response to increasing environmental stress and demand for natural resources.
Mr. Cohen is an environmental science and pre-medicine major. As a Detroit native, he is keenly aware of the connection between environmental conditions and community health. He aspires to become a cardiovascular surgeon and a consultant to hospitals to encourage the management of biological wastes in an environmentally responsible manner.
