Dr. Larry Lemke receives teaching award

Congratulations to Larry Lemke, who received a 2012-2013 Wayne State University College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Teaching Award, with special designation for mentoring undergraduate research.

Dr. Lemke has been recognized for his achievements as a teacher-scholar including designation as a University of Michigan Teaching Fellow, an NSF CAREER Award, a WSU Career Development Chair, and a WSU Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Since joining the WSU faculty in 2003, Larry has served as a research mentor to nine graduate and 35 undergraduate students, co-authored nearly 30 peer-reviewed articles and technical reports, and developed teaching materials in hydrogeology, sedimentology, and environmental geology.

Three of his peer-reviewed contributions to the NSF On-the-Cutting-Edge teaching collection received 'Exemplary' ratings, which are awarded to only 10 to 20% of the activities in the collection based upon criteria including scientific accuracy; alignment of learning goals, activities and assessments; and pedagogic effectiveness.

Larry joins two other Geology faculty members who have been honored with CLAS teaching awards: Dr. Jeff Howard (2010-2011) and Dr. Ed van Hees (2007-2008), which demonstrates a consistent and longstanding commitment to educational excellence in our department.
