Wayne State Economics Club fosters interdisciplinary engagement, real-world insights
The Wayne State University Economics Club is expanding opportunities for students across disciplines to engage with economics through networking events, faculty collaborations and industry partnerships.
Open to students in economics, political science, mathematics and business, the club provides a platform to explore the role of economics in various fields. Events bring together students and faculty, including a mixer last November that featured eight faculty members and over 60 students, with keynote addresses by College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Dean Stephanie Hartwell and Assistant Vice President for Strategic Operations and Academic Communications Brandon Gross.
The club has collaborated with institutions such as the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, the Mike Ilitch School of Business and Huntington National Bank. Events have included a panel discussion with Chicago Fed Vice President Rick Mattoon, a Detroit economic development bus tour led by Chicago Fed Principal Business Economist Martin Lavelle and an exclusive lunch with economic experts at the Chicago Fed’s Detroit branch.
Students have also attended high-profile events, including the Federal Reserve’s Automotive Insights Symposia, Detroit Economic Club discussions featuring business leaders such as Dan Gilbert and Bill Emerson, and seminars hosted by the American Arab Chamber of Commerce and the University of Michigan Research Seminar in Quantitative Economics.
Later this semester, the club plans to host another Detroit bus tour with the Federal Reserve's Martin Lavelle and collaborate on events with Wayne State’s Law School and Department of Mathematics.
