Scholarships and financial aid

The annual Wayne State University Scholarship Application period runs from Oct. 1 through March 1. Applicants will be considered for the scholarships listed below, as well as the scholarships available throughout the university, by using just one application.

Department scholarships

Coleman A. Young Scholarship Endowment Fund

This fund is established to recognize the scholastic achievement of African American studies majors and to encourage their continued progress at Wayne State University. Only African American studies majors are eligible. Recipients are chosen on the basis of scholastic achievement (and must maintain a 3.0 GPA in the department), qualities of leadership, and/or significant service to community development.

Dorothy Wynn Clore Annual Scholarship

Preference will be given to students taking a minimum of 11 credits per semester who have taken or are currently enrolled in an African American Studies course and are graduates of a City of Detroit high school (public, private or charter); and thereafter, to students taking a minimum of 11 credits per semester that have taken or are currently enrolled in an African American Studies course. A minimum 3.0 GPA is required. Applicants must submit a 300-word essay on the topic of athletics and teamwork. The essay should explore their thoughts on how participation in athletics shaped their view of teamwork and how teamwork impacts their personal and professional interactions.

Dudley Randall Scholarship Endowment Fund

To be eligible, applicants must be full-time undergraduate African studies majors with a concentration in cultural studies and the arts. Applicants must demonstrate financial need. Selection will be based on scholastic achievement (includes GPA and leadership qualities).

Pamela A. Tinsley Memorial Annual Scholarship

This fund is established to recognize scholastic achievement, encourage continued progress, and provide assistance to students in financing their education in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. To be eligible, applicants must be full or part-time undergraduate students majoring or minoring in African American studies with a minimum 2.5 GPA.

Perry Mars Scholarship Endowment Fund

This fund is established to recognize scholastic achievement, encourage continued progress, and provide assistance to students in financing their education in the Department of African American Studies in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. To be eligible, applicants must be full or part-time undergraduate or graduate students taking courses in or accepted for study in the Department of African American Studies with a minimum 2.5 GPA.
