Biological Sciences Annual Research Retreat 2023
This year’s Biological Sciences Annual Research Retreat was attended by more than 80 undergraduate and graduate students, postdocs and research associates and faculty.
Two graduate students, Sudeshna Biswas (Lab Meller) and Bianca Pereira (Lab Alcedo), and a postdoc, Dr. Kishore Gopalakrishnan (Lab Donna Kashian), as well as three of the department faculty, Drs. Chuanzhu Fan, Haidong Gu and Hanaa Hariri, gave oral presentations.
The Oct. 21 event’s keynote speaker, Dr. Vishal Gohil, gave an inspiring talk about the promise of elesclomol, a small molecule that he and his colleagues showed can treat copper metabolism disorders, like Menkes disease. Some of their work was published in Science in 2020. Dr. Gohil, who received his Ph.D. from the department in 2008 under the mentorship of Dr. Miriam Greenberg, is now a full professor at Texas A&M University.
The event also had 27 poster presentations. Seven graduate students won best poster prizes: Mohamed Dabaja (Lab Alcedo), Aishwarya Ghosh (Lab Schrader), Emma Fidler (Lab Ansari), Vikalp Kumar (Lab Greenberg), Sydney Scofield (Lab Sadagurski), Brendyn St. Louis (Lab Lee) and Hadi Yassine (Lab Schrader).
The best undergraduate poster went to co-presenters Ali Rashid and Lin Rayes (Lab Njus). The Department of Biological Sciences extends congratulations to our student winners and many thanks to the Department Research Committee and student volunteers for organizing this event.
