Assistant Professor Arun Anantharam Lands Four Year Grant from the American Heart Association

Regulated secretions from the adrenal gland are essential for the human body to modulate heart function, pain detection, and "fight-or-flight" responses. These secretions are controlled through a molecular complex that regulates the release of chemicals through the fusion of vesicles within the cell and the cell membrane. Dr. Arun Anantharam, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences, has received funding for four years from the American Heart Association for his research grant "The Regulation of Adrenal Hormone Secretion by Dynamin GTPase" to study the role of a protein called dynamin in regulated secretion process. The expectation is that research directed at a better understanding of dynamin function will reveal novel therapeutic targets to modulate pain management and cardiovascular function.
