Yin elected into Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics' 2015 Class of Fellows

Gang George Yin, a professor in Wayne State University's Department of Mathematics, was recently named into the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics' (SIAM) 2015 Class of Fellows.

SIAM Fellows are designated each year to recognize members of the community for their distinguished contributions to the disciplines of applied mathematics, computational science and related fields. The Fellows Selection Committee selects fellows based on nominations by SIAM members.

"It is such an honor to be elected as a fellow of SIAM," Yin said. "I am humbled by the encouragement my peers and SIAM have given me, and grateful to Wayne State University for providing me with this opportunity. I am dedicated to furthering my research, learning more and contributing to the field of applied mathematics in the years to come."

Yin was recognized for his contributions to stochastic systems theory, modeling, computational methods and applications. His research interests include applied probability and stochastic processes, stochastic approximation and optimization, mathematics of finance, manufacturing systems, and others.

Yin and 30 other fellows will be honored this August in Beijing during the Prizes and Awards Luncheon at the International Congress on Industrial and Applied Mathematics. Other 2015 fellows hail from around the globe, including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University, Technion - Israel Institute of Technology, ETH Zurich, the University of Cambridge and the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

In addition to raising the visibility of applied mathematics and computational science, the program helps makes SIAM members more competitive for awards, honors and leadership positions.

Yin is the current chair for the SIAM Activity Group on Control and Systems Theory. He has previously served as vice chair and program director. He also serves on the editorial board of the SIAM Journal on Control and Optimization.

A Wayne State faculty member since 1987, Yin holds a bachelor's in mathematics from the University of Delaware. At Brown University he earned master's degrees in applied mathematics and electrical engineering, as well as a doctorate in applied mathematics.
