Leon Bates

Ph.D. student, Leon Bates, delivered three presentations at the 103rd Association for the Study African American Life and History (ASALH) conference, held October 3 -7, 2018, in Indianapolis.

His presentations included his research: "John Freeman: and the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850"; "Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Henry Ward, M.D. Medical Corps, U.S. Army - Reserves"; and "'Only Just A Nigger': The Death of Edward Phillips, and the Rise of African American Policemen and Fireman in Indianapolis."

All three topics are from little known or long forgotten Indianapolis history, which made them especially relevant to both historians and members of the local community attending the conference.
