Council for Clinical Certification updates to 2020 guidelines (per ASHA)
After a review of feedback, the Council for Clinical Certification (CFCC) received related to the preparation of entry-level professionals, the following updates, summarized below, were made to 2020 SLP Standards V-C and VII-A, effective with applicants who begin their graduate programs and/or CF experiences on or after January 1, 2023.

Our annual fall alumni event will take place on Thursday, October 27, 2022, at 7 p.m. This will be a two-hour (two CEUs) Zoom event: Neurodiversity Affirming Practice for the Autistic Population. Please contact Nan Liening (nanliening@wayne.edu) if you're interested in attending.
Kopp Lecture: We are planning to hold the Kopp Lecture in the spring. The date is to be determined. We are planning to reschedule our speaker from last spring, Mark DeRuiter, Ph.D. on the topic of "Evidence Based Clinical Education." We are hoping for an appreciation luncheon to follow. Our plans will reflect the university covid guidelines for spring.

After 32 years, Karen O'Leary retires
On January 1, Karen O'Leary '80 officially retired from her position as director, WSU Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) Clinics and clinical coordinator for speech-language pathology. O'Leary had been employed by the university since 1990 and had served as SLP clinical director since 2009.
Team news
Sydney Bojrab and family welcomed Anders Emerson Bojrab on August 15, 2022. Sydney is a clinical instructor on our adult/STEPSS team. Mom and baby are doing great!
Jenna Perrotta, part-time pediatric clinical instructor, is expecting a baby boy in early October! Congratulations to Jenna and her family!
Kimberly Lyon, M.A., CCC-SLP, joined our clinical faculty as a part-time pediatric supervisor in spring/summer semester 2022. She received her Master of Arts in Speech-Language Pathology from Wayne State University in 2019. She has experience working in both adult and pediatric outpatient rehabilitation, and acute and subacute care facilities. Her clinical interests include dysphagia, cognitive-communication disorders, acquired and developmental language disorders, motor speech disorders, complex communication needs and clinical supervision. A California native, Ms. Lyon enjoys the beach and all things outdoors, as well as reading, cooking and traveling. She lives in Detroit with her partner, Nick, one-year-old son, Miro and two dogs.
Clinical faculty updates
Aaron Hardy-Smith
Aaron Hardy-Smith, M.A., CCC-SLP, Ed.S. is the director of Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) at MetroEHS Pediatric Therapy Company. She earned her B.S. and M.A. degrees in speech-language pathology from Western Michigan University and her Education Specialist certification in Special Education Administration from Wayne State University.
Aaron has worked in various settings and began her career as a school-based SLP. She served as a clinical instructor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Wayne State University for ten years, where she taught and supervised undergraduate and graduate students pursuing careers in the field. Mrs. Hardy-Smith is pleased to return to WSU as a part-time clinical educator in the outpatient clinic!

This is an introduction to some and a fond "hello gain!" to others... I am honored to now serve in the role of clinic director for our on-campus clinics and clinical coordinator working with all of our off-campus affiliates in placing our students. The continued support of our on-campus clinical faculty and off-campus community partnerships is valued beyond measure!
My goal is to maintain Wayne State University's legacy of providing strong clinical education, in no small part due to your support, and continue the growth of our clinical programs and community partnerships.
