Message from Department Chair, Dr. Jinsheng Zhang

Jinsheng ZhangDear alumni and friends:

I hope this newsletter finds you well. The Department of Communication and Science Disorders has shifted back to in-person instruction and learning and there are many exciting updates I am delighted to share with you in this winter 2022 edition of our department's newsletter.

There are many excellent stories in this newsletter but I want to highlight that this issue celebrates some major changes to our Speech-Language Pathology program. This issue features articles about Mrs. Karen O'Leary, who is celebrating her retirement after 32 years with the program including serving as SLP Clinical Director since 2009, and her successor Mrs. Tausha Moore who is very experienced and I am excited to see lead the clinics for years to come. In recent months, Moore and O'Leary oversaw the implementation of exciting new upgrades to the Speech and Language Clinics on campus. As you can see, the generous support from the Baiardi Family Foundation has helped the clinics with new additions, including an acute care simulation room, a group therapy room, a sensory room, and the development of a courtyard play area. This newsletter features an article laden with photographs of the new additions, which will significantly enhance the quality of our student training and patient services.

I hope you enjoy reading this newsletter. Without the support from our wonderful students, alumni, and friends, we wouldn't be able to accomplish all that we have, and we hope you continue to stay in touch and support our program in the future. A great time to make a donation to the department is on Wayne State's annual Giving Day on Thursday, April 7, 2022, as fellow Warriors come together to support important causes throughout our community. If you have any updates of your own, please reach out to me at jinzhang@wayne.edu, I would love to hear about how you've utilized the skills and connections you've made at Wayne State to continue changing the community and world for the better. If you have career news to share, want to become more involved with the department, or simply would like to chat, please do not hesitate to reach out.

All the best,

Jinsheng Zhang, Ph.D., chair and professor
