Prof. Haidong Gu Earns a Five-Year Support of 1.25 M from NIH

Herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) causes a wide range of clinical manifestations, including cold sores, genital ulceration, keratitis, and herpes encephalitis. Infected cell protein 0 (ICP0) is a key HSV-1 gene regulator that counteracts host anti-viral defenses to allow viral genes to be activated. Dr. Gu's recent proposal of dissecting the functional domains of ICP0 to understand how HSV-1 overcomes host defenses has been recognized for its novel approaches and has received a five-year grant of $1,250,000 in direct research costs.
