Faculty and staff

Randy Haas received a Hunt Postdoctoral Fellowship from the Wenner-Gren Foundation to support his research and publication project, "The Andean Ascent: High-Altitude Forager Archaeology in South America."

Lauren Hayes and Yuson Jung had an article accepted to the Annals of Anthropological Practice, "Beyond Methods: A Model for Teaching Theory in Applied Anthropology."

Yuson Jung, Andrea Sankar, and 10 Wayne State anthropology students co-authored an article that was accepted by Human Organization, "Responsible Driving in the Age of Smartphones: Applied Research for Improving Road Safety in the Motor City."

Andrew Maske's article, "Otagaki Rengetsu: Poet, Potter, Nun," was published in the journal Studio Potter.

Megan McCullen received a grant from the Michigan Arts & Culture Council to fund the upcoming exhibit in the Grosscup Museum of Anthropology, "The Science of Culture."

Jessica Robbins-Panko was appointed to the position of Digital Editor and to the editorial board for Medical Anthropology Quarterly.

Krysta Ryzewski received the 2023 James Deetz Book Award from the Society for Historical Archaeology for her book, Detroit Remains and her research was featured in American Archaeology magazine.

Current students

  • Emily Bowery (undergraduate; Global Health and Social Medicine minor) was accepted to the Peace Corps in Ecuador
  • Julia DiLaura (M.A. student) presented on her research about the archaeology of a Russian-Turkish Jewish bathhouse in Detroit at the Midwest Historical Archaeology Conference, Lansing, in October
  • Stacy Markel (Ph.D. candidate) received an award from the Joseph L. Peyser Endowment for the Study of New France to support her dissertation research
  • Gabriel Mohney (undergraduate; Global Health and Social Medicine minor) was accepted to join the Peace Corps in Malawi, working on health education and promotion.
  • Laura Sutherland (Ph.D. student, SWAN) was accepted to the WSU Institute of Gerontology predoctoral training program
  • Kathryn Wright (Ph.D. student) received the Shirley Brice Heath Travel Award from the Council for Anthropology and Education

New Ph.D.s

  • Michael Thomas defended his doctoral dissertation, "Human-Centered Design In Medias Res: Automotive Design, Cosmotechnics, and Transcendence in the United States and China"
  • Summar Saad defended her doctoral dissertation, "A Cognitive Ethnography of the Brain Death Debates"
