On the website for the 2013 Michigan Notable Books, Dr. Boyd's work is described as "an insightful examination of her relationships with family, friends, and colleagues. She writes of the complexities, joys and sadness of lives shared and the influences of daily living on them.

Dr. Boyd is a Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of African American Studies in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Wayne State University.
