Eboe Hutchful in Kuala Lumpur

Dr. Eboe Hutchful attended a 'Civil Society and the Security Sector Training Workshop' organized by RESDAL in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on 4-6 August, 2019, representing the African Security Sector Network (ASSN), a pan-African network of security sector reform experts which he co-founded in 2003, acting successively as first Chair and then Executive Secretary. The workshop' was organized by RESDAL, which describes itself as a 'Security and Defense Network in Latin America', and is best known for its 'Comparative Atlas of Defense in Latin America and the Caribbean' (https://www.resdal.org/ing/defensa.html) and the 'Public Security Index' (https://www.resdal.org/ing/libro-seg-2013/index-public-security-2013.html). The event in Kuala Lumpur was a technical workshop with a small, intimate working group of 8 participants, made up of3 representatives of Civil Society Organizations from Sri Lanka, Serbia, Iraq, Nigeria, as well as ASSN and three RESDAL technical staff. The key focus of the training was on the mechanics of creating a Public Security Index and RESDAL's own experience in publishing the 'Index' and 'Atlas' for Latin America. The meeting explored the feasibility of creating a 'Public Security Index' in other regions, learning from RESDAL's methodology and approach.
