First Annual Harvest Dinner, September 25, 2008

On September 25, 2008, about 80 individuals from campus and the community came together for the First Annual SEED Wayne Harvest Dinner, an event organized to celebrate the local harvest and SEED Wayne’s first year accomplishments. Guests were SEED Wayne community and campus partners, student participants in and campus-based supporters of SEED Wayne, and community members—including about 25 youth—associated with Capuchin Soup Kitchen and Earthworks Urban Farm.

The event was held at WSU’s McGregor Memorial Conference Center from 5:30-8:00 PM, and featured a tour of SEED Wayne sites on campus and a delicious meal of local foods prepared by the skilled chefs of AVI Foodsystems, Inc. Sites that were visited included the Warrior Demonstration Garden, the Cafeteria Composters at McGregor, and Mort Harris Recreational Center, the last for a talk about their Summer Youth Fitness and Nutrition Camp. SEED Wayne student volunteers served as tour guides and also as speakers about the garden and composting projects.

SEED Wayne participants were able to meet all the partners, learn more about on- and off-campus projects, and celebrate a summer of successes. At the end of the event, Kami Pothukuchi, the SEED Wayne Faculty Coordinator, thanked the community and campus partners along with all others that have been involved with the program. Overall, the SEED Wayne First Annual Harvest Dinner was a great success, even as it offered many lessons for future such dinners in future years. We hope to be able to open it up to more campus and community members in future years.

Will Ahee, SEED Wayne Student Assistant, spoke to guests about the McGregor composters.  He gave the kids a choice about opening the composters; kids opted for keeping them closed!

The crowd assembled to listen to Kristina Stonehill and Brian Kasprzyk to tell them about the Warrior Garden and their role in it.
