Admission to the doctoral program requires:

  • a completed M.S. degree (the mean GPA of those admitted for Fall 2015 was 3.8)
  • GRE scores (required ALONG with the formal application)
  • for applicants whose primary language is not English - completion of English proficiency requirement - scores from TOEFL (79 internet-based and 550 paper-based) or MELAB (85) or IELTS (6.5)
  • three letters of recommendation
  • a personal statement describing academic interest and goals
  • an interview will be arranged (live in person or web-based)

While early application is encouraged, applications must be received by the last day of January for admission in the following Fall semester (Aug/September). This is in order to meet various deadlines for funding (e.g. Graduate Professional Scholarships - for which applications are due in mid-March). All candidates must meet the admission requirements of both the Department of Nutrition and Food Science and Wayne State University's Graduate School.
