Like the BA in Near Eastern Languages, students in the BA in Near Eastern Studies acquire a proficiency in either Hebrew or Arabic. However, the emphasis in this program is on the culture of this part of the world.
Students must complete 38 credits as follows:
A minor in Near Eastern Studies consists of a minimum of twenty-five credits. These include at least sixteen credits in either Arabic or Hebrew, taking the 1010-1020, 2010-2020 sequences in either language. In addition, the student must take at least nine credits in cognate courses offered by the Department in the field of ancient Near Eastern, Israeli, or Arab/Islamic and Middle Eastern, history, anthropology, or civilization.
The Honors Program in Near Eastern Studies is open to students of superior academic ability who are majoring in Near Eastern. To be recommended for an honors degree from this department, a student must maintain a cumulative honor point average of at least 3.3. He/she must accumulate at least fifteen credits in honors-designated course work and must demonstrate the ability to do independent study and an original Honors Thesis during the senior year. Kape Memorial Endowment Fund
The income from this endowment is used to provide annual scholarships for full time undergraduate or graduate students in the Department of Classical and Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures who have demonstrated a serious and sustained interest in the study of Hebrew. This scholarship is to go only to students in financial need.
Rouchdy – Fakhouri Endowed Scholarship Fund
The Professors Rouchdy – Fakhouri Scholarship aims to provide meritorious undergraduate or graduate students with the financial support to enroll in the Department of Classical and Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures and to pursue their education in the field of Arabic language.
Asmaa Jamil Endowed Scholarship
This scholarship was established to benefit students in Near Eastern Studies. Preference will be given to full-time or part-time graduate or undergraduate students majoring in Near Eastern Studies in the Department of Classical and Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures
Salim Khaldieh Memorial Scholarship Fund
This scholarship fund is to benefit students in Near Eastern Studies in the Department of Classical and Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures . Preference will be given to full time undergraduate students majoring or otherwise demonstrating a strong interest in Arabic language courses. Incoming freshmen are eligible to receive awards. This is to benefit students based on need and not necessarily the GPA.
